How Facebook can support work-placements: Case-studies in engineering and education
This webinar showcases an innovative approach to supporting student work-integrated learning during work-placement through Facebook. Students are commonly placed individually, whilst facing multiple challenges to optimal learning. Creating an online community-of-practice among students and mentors supported students in their real work environments and helped develop their professional identity. We will present findings about how engagement in an online community-of-practice supports students in developing their professional identity during work placements. We will draw on case studies from two disciplines: Engineering and Education. The project has implications for optimising students’ WIL during work-placements for developing their professional identities.

Dr Kim Anh Dang
Kim Anh Dang is a Senior Lecturer (TESOL & Languages Education) at Monash University, Senior Fellow (Higher Education Academy, UK), and Fellow (Monash Education Academy). She is an award-winning educator and researcher, having received multiple international, national and institutional awards for outstanding research, research supervision and excellence in teaching. She has been exploring innovative work-integrated learning models, including collaborative peer learning models and online placements, to support student learning during work placements. Kim has published widely in the areas of professional identity, agency, collaborative professional learning and higher education in high-impact international journals.
Dr Minh Hue Nguyen
Minh Hue Nguyen is interested in creating productive learning experiences in WIL placements for preservice teachers to transition effectively into the teaching profession. She is passionate about finding ways for institutions to support preservice teachers and teacher educators in this learning. Her research has been recognised through a number of national and institutional awards. She has published widely in the areas of professional learning, professional identity and agency in WIL placements.
Associate Professor Mohan Yellishetty
Mohan Yellishetty is an Australian Endeavour Fellow and AusIMM’s Chartered Mining Engineer with an established teaching and research profile in the field of mining engineering. He uses a variety of pedagogical practices to optimise teaching-learning outcomes that not only contribute to the strong student engagement, but also prepare students for employment within the Australian and global mining industry. His diverse pedagogical strengths include: presentations by mining industry experts drawn from various industries; work integrated learning (WIL) through field trips and field placements over summers; and industry-based projects and team work activities designed to enhance student learning and engagement.
Prof. Angela Carbone
Angela Carbone is a Professor and Associate DVC Learning Teaching and Quality the STEM College, RMIT University. Her teaching achievements have been recognised nationally, awarded the nation’s highest teaching award, and securing two National Teaching Fellowships. Angela led a multi-institutional employability research project capturing innovative approaches to develop students’ employability skills. She chaired the Embedding Employability into Teaching & Learning Conference 2016 and is a member of the International Education, Practice and Employability Network. She has presented her ideas at an International Think Tank on Graduate Attributes and Employability, and is widely published in the area of Education and Employability.
